Documentary: Lebanon, France, Quatar, (2021) | Director: Abdallah Al-Khatib | Running Time: 1h 29m
Languages: Arabic | Subtitles: English.
The district of Yarmouk (Damascus, Syria) sheltered the biggest Palestinian refugee camp in the world from 1957 to 2018. When the Syrian revolution broke out, the regime of Bashar Al-Assad saw Yarmouk, a refuge of rebels and resistance, and set up a siege from 2013 on. Gradually deprived of food, medicine and electricity, Yarmouk was cut of from the rest of the world. Abdallah Al-Khatib was born in Yarmouk and lived there until his expulsion by Daesh in 2015. Between 2011 and 2015, he and his friends documented the daily life of the besieged inhabitants, who decided to face bombing, displacement and hunger with rallying, study, music, love and joy. Hundreds of lives that were irremediably transformed by war and siege, from Abdallah’s mother who turned into a nurse taking care of the elders of the camp, to the fiercest activists whose passion for Palestine got gradually undermined by hunger – check out the trailer below:
GRAMNet is also delighted to present a brand new animation:
FROM BAD TO WORSE; NAVIGATING THALASSEMIA CARE IN LEBANON (2023)
This short animation shares the typical healthcare journey of Syrian families and the challenges they faced in accessing healthcare. The video tells the story of an MSF-run paediatric thalassemia unit in Lebanon and describes how staff and patients at this clinic experienced the recent multiple crises in Lebanon. This animation seeks to raise awareness of the challenges in accessing thalassemia care. Moreover, I hope this video acts as a tool to advocate for improved access and long term, sustainable thalassemia healthcare for people in Lebanon. This animation was created by Nader Tabri and stems from PhD research conducted by Molly Gilmour. The research enquiry was lead by Belal Shukair and translation was completed by Fátima Foud.
With thanks to Molly Gilmour for bringing this brilliant project to GRAMNet.
