As part of BEMIS’ celebration of the 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, we invite everyone to attend our lecture series and film documentary premiere. We seek to initiate and continue our work in relation to progressing an inclusive society where the cultural diversity of Scotland is recognised as a national asset.
This themed year offers an opportune moment to link the past to the present—to evaluate where we are as a nation and what we collectively seek to achieve in the future.
All events are free and open to the public. Please use the links below to book tickets with Eventbrite.

In March 2016 the Scottish Government alongside key partners launched the Race Equality Framework for Scotland 2016 – 30. BEMIS recognise that an aspect of the framework requires us to consider Scotland’s history in the post devolution contemporary period. As part of our programme of events to mark Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archeology 2017 we have commissioned Scotland’s pre-eminent historian, Professor Sir Tom Devine to explore migration to Scotland from 1950 to the present day.
This event will be introduced by a guest chair and their will be an opportunity for a Q+A post talk.

An Illustrated talk by writer and broadcaster Billy Kay, author of The Scottish World.
Drawing on a lifetime of exploring, writing and broadcasting about Scots, their culture and journeys across the globe, Billy Kay reflects on the history of the Scots in Poland. Billy will celebrate the historic cultural connections which developed between Poland and Scotland in the present and the past, and illustrate the talk with clips from his BBC Radio Scotland series Merchants, Pedlars, Mercenaries and Societies with Secrets. He will compare and contrast the Polish migration to Scotland of the present day with the heyday of the Scottish Brotherhoods which existed in twelve Polish cities in the 17th century. How many of the Poles living in Scotland today e.g. are simply Scots returning to their original homeland?
