Supporting Scotland’s culturally diverse family
comm-champBecome a COMMUNITY CHAMPION and Volunteer with Gathered Together!

Minimum Requirements: Be a parent. No minimum age.

About this opportunity: Gathered Together are looking for parents from diverse backgrounds to become community champions who already have an active role in their local ethnic minority communities. Champions will gather evidence of parent’s experiences, share stories of parental involvement and be our link to the grassroots communities through the work they are already a part of and be able to engage with other local community groups and schools. Through the support being offered the volunteer will empower ethnic minority parents to be more confident to get involved in their child’s education and school community.

Frequency & Commitment: The project is funded until March 2015, we would ask volunteers to commit to the life of the project.

Group/Organisation Aims: Gathered Together is a pilot project working to support ethnic and cultural minority parents to become more involved in their child’s education and the school community. We are working in 6 local authorities- Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Falkirk, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannanshire. We are a joint venture between BEMIS and SPTC, funded by the Scottish Government through its Third Sector Early Intervention Fund, managed by the Big Fund. We work closely with parents, schools and local authorities to identify and build good practice in inclusion and equality.

Skills, Experience or Qualifications Required: Excellent listening skills. Excellent verbal communication skills including English. Ability to speak additional languages. Involved in the local diverse community. Confident to speak to new groups of parents. Be non-judgemental and non-discriminatory while talking to groups and representing Gathered Together.
