In April, we’ll be screening a lovely film virtually by Caleb Johnston, a human geographer and former GRAMNet member/UofG staff! His film CITY OF LONG STAY is a moving portrayal examining the conditions and circumstances drawing Europeans and North Americans to migrate to Thailand for dementia care.

Cost of Living Suppor

BEMIS is working with the Scottish Government to raise awareness of their website to help with the cost of living crisis.

Dandelion Grant Program

This partnership between BEMIS and Dandelion has been developed to support and celebrate community groups and organisations who want to start growing their own food across Scotland, and to create opportunities for diverse communities across Scotland to take part in the Dandelion Harvest Festivals in September.

GRAMNet Film Series 2022

The GRAMNet film series was instigated by Dr Mariangela Palladino, then of the University of Glasgow and formerly of BEMIS. She volunteered a film screening that chronicled Ethiopian, Eritrean and Sudanese Asylum Seekers in torturous conditions. The partnership has continued over the years, adding in new supporters and sponsors but as a faithful collaboration between BEMIS and GRAMNet.

Scotland’s Winter Festivals 2021/2022

Scotland’s Winter Festivals aim to mobilize the people of Scotland and those with an affinity to Scotland to join in the St Andrew’s Day, and Burns Night celebrations, boosting Scotland’s key tourism and events sectors and the wider economy, enhancing community engagement and raising Scotland’s international profile

Celtic Connections in the Community

BEMIS Scotland in partnership with Unison, Celtic Connections and the Scottish Government are delighted to offer a new opportunity for Glasgow’s communities to programme a bespoke Celtic Connections in the Community celebratory event, with grants available of up to £1,500.

Scotland’s Winter Festivals and St Andrew’s Fair Saturday 2019/2020

With support from the Scottish Government, the small grant fund will be available to Scotland’s diverse ethnic and cultural minority community organisations to programme bespoke multicultural celebratory events that are open to the public to attend. These events will enable everyone to experience the dynamic and invigorating nature of Scotland’s cultural and ethnic diversity.

On 1 January 2016, the number of people living in the EU who were citizens of non-member countries was 20.7 million, while the number of people living in the EU who had been born outside of the EU was 35.1 million. In 2015 alone, 1.4 million EU citizens migrated to another Member State.

Modern Apprenticeships for All

Our Modern Apprenticeship programme is a paid, work-based training programme aimed at young people aged between 16 and 24 years of age. The MA programme takes up to eighteen months and will lead to an industry approved qualification.

Gathered Together – Cruinn Còmhla

BEMIS and SPTC (Scottish Parent Teacher Council) are working together on an exciting new project, Gathered Together (Cruinn Còmhla), to support parents from ethnic and cultural minorities getting involved with their children’s school.

Year of Food and Drink

A BEMIS Scotland fund of over £52,000—provided with support from the Scottish Government—will be used to arrange events across the country celebrating ‘Scotland’s mosaic of communities and evolving heritage’.

GRAMNet Film Series 2015/2016

The 2015/2016 Film Series is organised by GRAMNet (Glasgow Refugee, Asylum and Migration Network) and BEMIS Scotland. The aim of Hidden Stories 2015 is to bring the often untold, surprising knowledge of migratory movements into view and to sharpen the focus on the unusual lives and journeys which are part of the epic stories of migration which feature in our program.

VALLEY Project

BEMIS in partnership with our European partners is developing the VALLEY project (Validation System in Lifelong Learning Experiences of Youth Volunteering). The theme of recognition and validation of learning outcomes from informal or non-formal settings is commonly understood as one of the most important challenges for educational and training sector nowadays.

“Hard-to-reach learners and youth” – European Focus Group

Since 2014 BEMIS is a part of the NECE initiative (Networking European Citizenship Education) as a member of the “Hard-to-reach learners and youth” focus group.  Within the group, we work with European learners, practitioners, researchers and policy makers from formal, non-formal and informal education.

Where brands come alive thPoverty and Ethnicity

Scotland in 2015 has never been more diverse. The percentage of the population who now identify as coming from Ethnic and Cultural minority communities, i.e. all of those who identified as something other than ‘White Scottish’ in the Scottish Census of 2011 is a significant 16% of the national population

Multicultural Homecoming 2014

“Homecoming Scotland 2014” is a Scottish Government initiative run by Visit Scotland to promote Scotland internationally, and to celebrate both the country’s heritage and the diverse communities that live here.

STEP in! Building Inclusive Societies through Active Citizenship

The project’s consortium is composed of educational experts and practitioners from seven different institutions from Cyprus, Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Slovenia and Sweden and Scotland. This project is funded from support from the European Commission. The Step In project consists of partners from universities, research institutes, NGOs and adult education providers.

Inserom Project

The Inserom project is a Grundtvig Lifelong funded programme. The organizations involved in the project (LDH, AEDH, BEMIS, CHC and APDHA) work closely in the field of Human Rights and Roma communities. In our work as organizations for the defence of Human Rights we have experienced first-hand many cases where Roma communities suffer various forms of discrimination across Europe.

Ethical Translation in Health Care Settings in Scotland

Drama based training tool across a range of health and social care settings have been developed. Five film-based training scenarios were developed for the education of health care practitioners, interpreters working in health care settings and migrant service providers and users.

Football Equity Project

The Scottish Football Association is committed to ensuring that football in Scotland is open to all and that barriers, real and perceived, are removed, particularly in relation to under-represented groups.
